The Context.

Apple News serves hundreds of millions of monthly users, billions of article views, and thousands of publishers. But most users either arrive via notifications to read a specific story, or—for those who open the app organically—stop at Top Stories, the first group in the feed. Either way, they leave without ever experiencing the huge catalog depth Apple News has to offer.

01

The Problem.

The feed lacked visual hierarchy and organization. Free and premium content were presented identically, with no system for distinguishing nuanced subscription offerings. Components weren’t flexible or future-proofed, and there was no design strategy behind feed logic and ordering.

The goal was to systematize all feed experiences, support editorial initiatives, and clearly celebrate premium content—while making the feed easier to browse and more personally relevant.

02

Flexible Card System.

A new card system designed to be flexible, clear, and capable of supporting heavy editorial work across over 500 leading publications. The system embraces the latest iOS patterns while enabling flexible theming and event support—allowing the team to change configurations with no overhead and support editorial moments that bring each story to life in striking detail.

03

Premium Aesthetics.

A clear visual distinction between standard and premium content, with a celebratory form-factor that brings magazine and newspaper stories to life. Vivid photography and animation, rich videos, and immersive layouts bring each story to life in striking detail—rewriting the reading experience for a world of journalism.

04

In-Feed Diversity.

New unit types like My Magazines, Favorites, and Sports bring variety and personalization—a feed that feeds your interests. These units help users explore an incredibly diverse and wide range of global publications, surfacing the most compelling, must-read articles alongside expert editor picks in Top Stories and Spotlight collections.

05

Scalable Templates.

Customizable templates for hub pages, channels, and topics that scale across the entire product. The system supports everything from global publications to local, national, and international titles—helping users stay close to what’s happening close to home while maintaining a seamless reading experience across all their devices.

06

Impact.

The redesign drove increased scroll depth, time spent, and content click-through rates. User signals increased significantly, as did trial starts from content engaged in the Today feed. Beyond metrics, the new system provided infrastructure for future features and coverage—a foundation that continues to scale.
